Dr. Prasad Iyer attended medical school at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Chief Residency at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Milwaukee, WI, and his Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN, where he also completed a Postdoctoral master’s degree in clinical and translational research. Dr Iyer is currently Professor and Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Mayo Clinic Arizona. He is also the Program Director of the Clinical Trialist Training Program and the Medical Director of the Mayo Hub of the Trial Innovation Network in the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences at Mayo Clinic. He is an expert in the recognition and endoscopic therapy of Barrett’s esophagus and early esophageal cancer. His research program is focused on the early detection of esophageal cancer and its precursors such as Barrett’s Esophagus and Squamous Dysplasia using novel non-endoscopic biomarker and molecular approaches, using clinical trials and artificial intelligence-powered approaches. His research program is funded by the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense and several Industry grants.
He has mentored over 30 medical students, residents, GI fellows, and junior faculty over his career, several of whom are pursuing careers in academic gastroenterology. He was recently awarded the Distinguished Endoscopic Research Mentoring Award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in recognition of his mentoring efforts.
Dr. Iyer is currently an Associate Editor of the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Chair of the GIQuIC Research Committee, ASGE DDW Hands on Committee and Vice-Chair of the AGA Endoscopy Technology and Imaging Section. He has completed terms as Associate Editor of the journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Chair of the International Committee of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles as well as several book chapters. He is a reviewer for many journals including Gastroenterology, the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
